About
Salsa
Salsa derives from the Cuban Mambo and is based on tight footwork driven from
the hips. Salsa music is a fusion of African rhythms and Hispanic music derived
from folk, gypsy, and Moorish roots, but there are many different styles which
have evolved across South America and the USA.
Cuban style
Cuban-style salsa combines
circular movements with the cross body lead (Dile que no) and the Guapea or
mambo, where the leader does a backward basic on 1-2-3 and a forward basic
on 5-6-7. The follower does the same, thereby mirroring the leader's movement.
This style is circular, with the leader and follower circling around each
other.
From Cuban salsa there is also la Rueda the Cuban Casino style or wheel dance.
Multiple couples exchange partners and carry out moves syncronised by a caller
Los Angeles style
The two essential elements of this dance are the forward/backward basic or mambo as described above, and the cross-body lead. The difference is that LA style is linear not circular involving exchanging positions rather than cconstantly travelling around one another.
New York style
This is a combination of the above, but the breaks (where the body changes direction) occur on the 2 and 6 as in ‘On 2’. NY instructor Eddie Torres aided in th developed this step pattern around the late 70's. The turns are much more strict and controlled.
Shines
Shines are basically ‘show-offs’
or solos, just as in breakdance or Samba. Shines generally involve fancy footwork
and body movements, especially of the shoulders, hips and feature contractions,
or upper bodyhits, much like in Krumping.
