Krumping (Closely linked to Clowning) is a fast, highly energised and theatrical dance.
We perform and teach this Hip Hop style. Krumping is confrontational, sometimes humorous with similarities to contemporary dance through the grounded supported stances, but with most movements rooted from African dance.
Our Krump performances incorporate lifts, freezes, chest hits and phrases.
The most famous Krumpers/ Clowners include Tommy the Clown, Miss Prissy (Madonna’s latest video), Tight Eyes…
Krumping has been very popular taught in schools, and as well as being a popular current topic, develops childrens co operative skills, dance interest and sense of achievement in performing confidently.
About Krumping
Krumping (also clown dancing or clowning) originated in the African-American community of South Central Los Angeles, California.
Clown Dancing was created
in the early nineties by Thomas Johnson
(Tommy the Clown).
In 1992, Tommy the Clown began fusing different local dance elements and created
a unique, universal style that in the end, aided him in promoting his own
career as a clown for children's parties. Tommy lived in a gang-ridden area
and had been in trouble with the law since his youth. Through the dance and
culture he created he wanted to help other young people to avoid involvement
with gang culture. Using the dance to enhance birthday party clown acts and
to advertise his business and gain clientèle, Tommy the Clown gained
notoriety in the area, and popularity as well. Soon numbers of youth were
interested in the dances he performed and he was able focus on that solely.
Clowning involves movements from local dances such as stripper dance and G
moves and crip walk, with elements from Jamaican Dancehall moves such as the
"butterfly" or the "rodeo," as well as elements from popping
and locking, (breakdancing). The school of Clowning involves painting of the
face, and this is a direct result of the dance arts origin being in clown
performance.
This underground movement soon spread beyond its point of origin, South-Central
L.A. and Compton, to the rest of California and beyond. The inception of Krump
occurred when a number of the original hip hop clowns and youth influenced
and exposed to that generation of clowning became older and found difference
with the Clown art. Currently it is estimated that there are around 50 clown
dancing groups. Krumping has entered mainstream hip hop culture through the
performance of krumping in various music videos.
Clowning vs Krumping
Krump or Krumping is the
evolution of the Clowning or Clown-dancing style of hip-hop street dancing.
The Kings and Queens of Krump are Miss Prissy, Tight Eyes, Big Mijo, Slayer,
and .Lil C.
Krumping is now a structured form of dance, with a variety of styles. As an
outlet for anger and as a non-violent alternative to the street violence that
is widespread in many of the areas where it is performed. Its dancing style
is necessarily fast and aggressive. Krumping can involve physical contact
between dancers, which can often look like a fight to outsiders, however,
the participants understand this to be part of the dance and do not condone
nor advocate assault and or violence.
Krump dancers do not paint their faces as the clowners, but is practiced very
differently to the Krump paintint, by a small percentage of the Krump community,
possibly, to symbolize ceremonial African war or dance paint.
