Modern hip hop music has given birth to new styles of hip hop dancing partly inspired by the old school styles, many of them focusing on upright dancing as opposed to breakdance which is better known for its floor-oriented movements.
Some more specific styles of new school hip hop are krumping, harlem shake, snap dance, clown walk, grinding, hyphy, and gangsta walking .
Classifying these
newer hip hop styles as a unique dance style of its own has grown common with
larger street dance competitions such as Juste Debout, which includes new
style as a separate category for people to compete in.
Hyphy (pronounced HI-fee. One
"gets hyphy" when they act or dance in an overstated and ridiculous
manner. Those who consider themselves part of the Hyphy movement would describe
this behavior as acting "stupid" or "going dumb."
The
Clown walk - When most people hear the word C-Walk, they often
think of the gang-related Crip Walk. The Clown Walk is a variation of the
Crip Walk, such as the shuffle and V's and expanding them to become flashier
and more entertaining. This form of dance has no gang relations and is meant
to be done for fun, rather than gang rituals.
