Brazilian Funk, Favela Funk, Baile Funk or Funk Carioca is "Funk from Rio". It's a type of dance music from Rio de Janeiro, derived from and similar to Miami Bass, with deep rapid beats and aggro vocals. In Rio it is most often simply known as Funk, although it is very different musically from what Funk means in most other places — including Brazil itself — and contexts.

The first mixed soul and disco parties in Rio, begining in the 70s, are considered in Brazil the grandfathers of baile funk. They happened at concert halls or nightclubs downtown middle class Rio de Janeiro, and the audience was a mix of poor black and white rich cariocas. Called first "black music" or "soul music" parties, and leaded by radio DJs, after a while they migrate to the suburbs first in 1980 and up to the favelas after 1998, transforming itself during the process into the actual bailes funk.

In 1989, the first portuguese lyrics appeared in the album FUNK BRASIL (Polygram), compiled and produced by Cidinho Cambalhota (who was killed in a robbery right before the release) and Marlboro. It became a top seller and inaugurated the pop phase of the genre in Brazil, with Cidinho e Doca, Claudinho e Buchecha and other artists becaming famous and making top money.
In 1998, the first favela parties took place. Baile Funk dance entails many movements, but in particular, provocative movements in a low second moving side to side with pelvic movements
